If you’re a couple who deal with sleep issues, you’re not alone. We’ve fully embraced separate sleeping, and we’re designing our own rooms together. Here’s the reveal of Andy’s room.

Andy and I have been living together for about two years now, and even before that, we had trouble successfully sleeping in the same bed. Andy’s a snorer and a sleepwalker, and I didn’t have the heart to constantly wake him up or guide him around. So most nights, he’d end up sleeping on the couch while I took the bed.
When we bought our home, Andy took over what I guess would normally be our guest room. We talked about it beforehand and asked each other: Does this mean anything to you about our relationship? Does it make you feel badly in any way? Do you feel isolated? And we found that as long as we knew how we were framing it – our best chance at getting a good night’s rest consistently – it didn’t have to change our relationship.
In some ways, however, it does change things. If we want to snuggle, we have to make it happen, instead of just naturally rolling over in the morning. And instead of making one bed in the morning and doing one set of sheets in the laundry, we do two. Other than that, our arrangement has made restful sleep easier than ever, and our cats split their time between our beds throughout the night. Andy also got a sleep study, where he was diagnosed with sleep apnea. His new CPAP machine has made him a near-silent sleeper and taken him from a few hours of light sleep to a whole night of rest. We’re both excited for what this could mean for our future. But for now, we went ahead and decorated Andy’s room as his own.

Andy wanted a wall color, and we were both drawn to this rich olive green. It’s Sherwin Williams, Privilege Green. The name is quite regrettable, but please don’t hold that against us.
We painted all of the walls and all the way down to the floor, including the baseboards, which I think gives paint such a modern touch.

The green is a great canvas on which the art we’ve collected really pops. I picked up this bull at a small art shop in Louisville.

The shoe credenza is IKEA HEMNES with their OSTERNAS leather pulls. It doubles as a media console below the TV and hides all of Andy’s shoes away.

This dresser is a family heirloom and missing a drawer right in the middle. I wanted to work with that, rather than trying to replace or match the drawer. So I just grabbed two basket trays from At Home and slid them in.

This little stool from At Home is a great drop zone for folded laundry, duffel bags, or anything that needs a moment before being put away.

Andy’s headboard is a secondhand Facebook Marketplace find. The rest of the sources for his actual bedding are listed below. I try to keep from layering on too many pieces that he’ll just have to take off every night. He loves a low-maintenance setup.

Bedding Sources:
Body pillow cover: Amazon
Linen pillow cases: Casaluna for Target
Duvet cover: Amazon
Cotton throw: H&M Home
Above the bed is a simple little 10-minute IKEA SILVERHOJDEN frame + upcycled album art hack that I detailed here. If you’re a collector of vinyl records, you probably have some great (free) art in your home already, so I hope this helps you give it a new home on the wall.

Andy’s only ask for the bed was to clear up nightstand space for his CPAP machine. So we went with sconces on both sides of the bed instead of lamps. These are IKEA ATERSKEN sconces, which are a goddamn steal at only $30 a pop. Unlike our DIY living room sconces, these are wired with plug-in cords.
My trick for keeping them straight is these teeny little clips from Amazon. Slip the cord into them and stick them to the wall. That’s it!

Future plans for this room include cutting the closet doors down so they don’t overlap such a ridiculous amount, and possibly adding wood, paint, or wallpaper to them. Weigh in on what you think we should do below:
